Addiction Services of Thames Valley (ADSTV) initiated Stage for Change in 2012 to help create awareness and understanding for those who want to make changes to substance use patterns or gambling activities.

By helping our communities understand the problem that exists right here in London, Middlesex, Elgin and Oxford counties as well as in Ontario and across the country we start the conversation that creates the support chain. How does it feel to struggle with substance use? How does it feel to have gambled more than you meant to? What does recovery mean or look like? These are the questions that many people have and we can share this information so that misconceptions are corrected, people are supported and stigma does not keep people away from the support they need. We need to change the way we talk about addictions so that we do not harm with our words or with the shame that can be created or maintained with words that hurt and demean.

MISSION

Our mission is to create awareness around addiction. When we create awareness, we can find common ground. We can create a community that is supportive. A supportive community can challenge stigma and work together to reduce it. When we start to challenge and reduce stigma, conversation begins.

When we think and act alone we can feel powerless. Problems associated with substance use or gambling or an addiction may seem insurmountable. When we positively come together as a community to understand challenges and support those starting the journey of recovery, we start momentum for positive change. Change does feel better when we know we are supported.

WHO IS ADDICTION SERVICES OF THAMES VALLEY?

Addiction Services of Thames Valley (ADSTV) helps individuals and families in the London, Middlesex, Elgin and Oxford counties navigate the challenges of gambling, drug and alcohol addiction. The goal of Stage for Change is to create awareness around the issues, create respect and support for those struggling with issues related to substance abuse or problem gambling and support loved ones, co-workers and acquaintances in the day-to-day role we have in the recovery process.

WHY DID WE CALL THIS STAGE FOR CHANGE?

Calling this event Stage for Change is part of the awareness around what addiction services workers call Stages of Change. Stages of Change is as model that helps us understand the behaviour change process. It is used in clinical settings where treatment takes place but is popular in many other areas as well such as weight management and organizational change management. It is a systematic approach assisting others and maybe ourselves with behavior changes. The idea behind the model is that behavior change does not happen in one step. Rather, people tend to progress through five stages on their way to sustaining long term behavioral changes.

I’M NOT AFFECTED BY ADDICTION, WHAT CAN I DO?

We all can help by not perpetuating the myths about addictions. Support and awareness are key. Watch the stories as we add to a library of real stories through out the year. Understand the Stages of Change Model. Pass on what you learn here, ask questions, listen and think about someone who may be struggling with addiction. Start the conversation that starts a support chain. Push a little – ‘share’ these stories on your personal facebook – you never know who you may reach out to. Awareness is not always a tangible thing, but we can all be certain that coming together in support will change some lives.

If you are struggling with addictions or know someone who is, just start talking – someone will be there for you – a journey of recovery can start at any time.

Thank you to everyone in our communities – it is possible to come together and start to make change.

Our sincere thanks to those who have volunteered to tell their stories of recovery. Telling your stories will change lives. You are the heroes of the POSSIBLE Campaign.
